Ujjayi Breath Yoga

Calms the body. Improves focus

Introduction

Ujjayi Pranayama, often referred to as the “victorious breath” or “ocean breath,” is a powerful yogic breathing technique that promotes relaxation, mental clarity, and overall well-being. By creating a gentle constriction in the back of the throat, Ujjayi breath produces a soothing sound reminiscent of ocean waves. This practice helps to harmonize the body and mind, reduce stress, and enhance focus, making it an essential tool for both beginners and experienced practitioners

How to Practice Ujjayi Pranayama:

  1. Find a Comfortable Seat

    • Sit in a comfortable position with a long, tall spine.
    • Ensure your sit bones are grounded and your shoulders are relaxed.
  2. Establish a Steady Breath

    • Close your mouth and breathe in and out through your nose.
    • Take a few deep breaths to settle into a steady rhythm.
  3. Constrict Your Throat

    • Slightly constrict the back of your throat as if you are whispering.
    • This will create a soft, ocean-like sound as you breathe.
  4. Inhale Deeply

    • Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose.
    • Feel the breath filling your lungs completely.
  5. Exhale Slowly

    • Exhale slowly and evenly through your nose.
    • Maintain the gentle constriction in your throat to keep the ocean sound.
  6. Find Your Rhythm

    • Continue breathing in this manner, focusing on the sound and sensation of your breath.
    • Aim for smooth, continuous cycles of inhales and exhales.

Tips for Practicing Ujjayi Pranayama:

  • Stay Relaxed: Avoid tension in your jaw, throat, and neck.
  • Practice Regularly: Consistent practice will help you master the technique and experience its benefits.
  • Use a Metronome: If needed, use a metronome to help maintain an even rhythm.
